Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The College offers 9 undergraduate engineering degrees accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET and an undergraduate Computer Science degree, accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET. In addition, a B.S. degree in Biometric Systems is offered. The college offers cooperative education programs, internships, and other domestic and international experiential educational opportunities. The college is well known for its outstanding senior design experience, with many projects supported by industry. The college has leading programs in many areas such as automotive technology, advanced materials for civil infrastructure, information technology, energy, mining, alternative fuels and engine emissions, power engineering, software development, biometrics, environmental studies and image processing.
The undergraduate student experience is enriched by participation in regional and national design competitions and our strong research reputation in the areas of energy, power engineering, mining, alternative fuels and engine emissions, software development, environmental restoration, occupational safety and health, biometrics systems, and civil infrastructure. Master's degrees are offered in aerospace, chemical, civil, computer science, electrical, industrial, mechanical, mining, and petroleum and natural gas engineering, industrial hygiene and safety management; both accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, and in software engineering, energy systems engineering and materials science engineering. Ph.D. degrees are offered in the nine disciplines of engineering, as well as in computer science, material science engineering and occupational safety and health. The College is very active in research and has a national and international reputation in many engineering fields. The College maintains a very close relationship with companies in the West Virginia High Tech Consortium, including the WVU-NASA Independent Verification Validation Center, NIOSH, NETL, and the FBI. The Extension and Outreach unit of the College promotes economic development in West Virginia.
