Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

To be eligible to receive a bachelor's degree, a student is required to satisfactorily complete the number of semester hours of work as specified in the curriculum of the program leading to the degree for which the student is a candidate. Students must achieve an overall University grade point average of 2.0 as well as a 2.0 grade point average (2.25 in Mining Engineering and Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering) in all courses completed within the student's major department.

Master's Degree Requirements

Each candidate must attain a 3.0 or better grade point average for all courses taken as a graduate student at West Virginia University as well as all courses applied toward meeting degree requirements. Master degree options are course work plus thesis or problem report or course work only. All candidates must pass a final oral or written examination. Course work older than 8 years at the time of graduation must be re-validated.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

Two semesters of full-time attendance at the Morgantown campus is required, consisting of a minimum of nine credit hours each. The candidate must complete all coursework, pass the comprehensive exams for admission to candidacy, and successfully defend the dissertation. Requirements for this degree must be completed within five years after admission to candidacy.
