Student Design Projects Description

Aerospace System Design

Team design project of an aircraft in response to a Request-For-Proposal. Design methodology focuses on a military need and incorporates performance, cost supportability, deployment, manufacturing, product quality and environmental considerations. The project draws on all of the aeronautical disciplines and provides students experience in applications of such disciplines to military aircraft design.


Nuclear Systems Design

Students are assigned to groups for the purpose of conducting a design study on an open-ended problem. Students must mathematically model the problem and propose solutions. Solutions are evaluated against established objectives and realistic constraints such as cost, reliability, survivability, safety, human factors, ethics, and social impact. The best solution is then optimized. Recent class problems have included future terrestrial and space-based Air Force systems.


Systems Design Project

This course provides a capstone system design experience for students who are not doing a systems design thesis. It will emphasize the practical details of applying systems engineering tools and techniques to a real multi-disciplinary design problem. Students will be assigned to small design teams and given a general problem statement. The team will be responsible for completing a thorough systems analysis of the problem, developing and evaluating alternative solutions, selecting the best alternative, proposing appropriate implementation of the selected solution, and documenting the entire experience.

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The Graduate School of Engineering and Management of the Air Force Institute of Technology provides engineering, scientific, and management education and defense-related research activities applicable to Air Force, Department of Defense, and civilian research and development environments. Applicants who are military officers or enlisted members from any of the U.S. services, military officers from selected foreign countries, U.S. government civilian employees, and non-government civilians who are U.S. citizens are eligible for admission.

Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Applicants for programs offered in the Graduate School of Engineering and Management must submit application materials through the Office of Admissions and the Registrar. Official transcripts and scores from the GRE and/or GMAT are required components in the application package. Admission is open to U.S. military officers and enlisted personnel from all branches of service, foreign officers whose countries have agreements with the U.S., Federal Government employees,U.S. Citizen employees of defense contractors and civilans who are U.S. citizens. Military officers apply through established procedure set by their respective service. Civilian applicants may apply to AFIT by completing an AFIT application form and submitting the appropriate supporting documentation.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Admission to the Graduate School of Engineering and Management is restricted to citizens of the United States and military officers sponsored by their governments. The International Military Student Office at AFIT assists international military officers and international government civilian employees with the procedures of application for admission to the Graduate School of Engineering and Management professional and continuing education offered by AFIT. Prospective international military students apply to the Graduate School of Engineering and Management through the United States Security Assistance Office (SAO) at the United States Embassy in their home country.

Residency Requirements

The residency requirement is met when the student completes three quarters of full-time study in residence during a single contiguous four-quarter period.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Students in master degree programs may transfer up to 12 credit hours of graduate credit from other accredited institutions. All transferred credits must receive course-by-course approval. All requirements other than the credits transferred in are the same as for non-transfer students.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.

Students can earn a dual degree. The course requirement is 48 quarter hours of graduate work for each degree with no overlap. Instead of a second thesis, the thesis for the second degree can be replaced by 12 quarter hours of courses.
