Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

The deadline by which the completed application for Fall admission and all supporting credentials should reach Vanderbilt ranges by program between December 15 and January 15. Admission decisions for Fall semester will be mailed by March 31 to all applicants whose files are completed by January 15. The application fee is waived for all applications completed on-line at

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Submission of scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required as part of the application to the Graduate School. None of the engineering graduate programs require a GRE subject test.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Proficiency in written and oral English is required for enrollment in an academic program. Applicants whose native language is not English generally should present the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with the application. International students transferring from unfinished degree programs of other universities in the United States should present TOEFL or IELTS scores. The minimum acceptable score on the paper-based total TOEFL is 570. The computer-based total acceptable score is 230, and for the new Internet-based test, 88. Many programs, however, require a considerably higher level of proficiency.

Residency Requirements

Master's degree candidates must spend at least one academic year of graduate study at Vanderbilt. They must be enrolled in the Graduate School during each fall or spring semester in which they are using libraries or other university facilities. The Ph.D. degree requires at least three academic years of graduate study. A student must complete 72 hours of graduate work for credit of which a minimum of 24 hours in formal coursework in the Vanderbilt Graduate School is required.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Transfer is made on the recommendation of the Chair of the major department and approval of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in the School of Engineering. A maximum of 6 semester hours of transfer credit may be applied toward the master's degree and in special cases 48 hours toward the Ph.D. 24 hours of coursework must be taken at Vanderbilt for Ph.D.; 24 hours for Masters. Transfer courses must have a grade of B or better and be graduate level courses.
