Student Design Projects Description

The major design project activities for the mechanical, electrical and computer engineering students are coordinated by the Innovation Center. Nearly 80 industrial sponsored projects are conducted in our senior design course, senior design electives, and our senior lab project activities. Students work on two semester multi-disciplinary projects through a 2 credit hour and a 3 credit hour course. The two credit hour course introduces the design and product development where a student team provides a design solution to an industry problem. The 3 credit hour course gives an opportunity to design, build and test, a complete product development experience.
The chemical engineering student's exposure to engineering design basically begins during the laboratory and unit operations courses where the nature of the work undertaken illustrates how to deal with the situation where there is no "correct answer," and how to get a feel for what is reasonable and what is not. The design experience culminates with CME 431 Design II which immerses the students into a comprehensive plant design problem. The problem and class discussions cover all areas from verbal description of the problem, technology selection, flowsheeting, material and energy balances, individual unit design, overall integration of units, plant layout, economic analysis and feasibility. Alternatives to the chosen design configuation are discussed, and students are free to explore and evaluate their own ideas. At all times, course instructors provide guidelines and suggestions to assist the students in developing appropriate design skills. ChemCad, Visio Technical, and Microsoft Project are used for the design project process simulations, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and project management respectively.
Civil engineering students benefit from a comprehensive design experience. Their initial exposure to design occurs in foundational design courses where each student must complete one or two focused design projects. Usually the design projects are group oriented. The design experience culminates in a capstone design event required by all civil engineering students (CEE 450). The scope and breadth of the annual capstone design project includes major elements of the following specialty areas of civil engineering: environmental, geotechnical, project management, structures, transportation, and water resources. The class is divided into design groups covering the specialty areas described above. Recent design projects have included designing an 82-acre campus and associated facilities for a local church group, designing a school building and athletic facilities for a local school district, and designing a commercial office park for a local municipality. The final set of deliverables includes a set of construction drawings and a set of design documents. Students also present their final designs to a group of stakeholders including the project client, university officials, and civil engineering students who have yet to enjoy the capstone design experience.
