Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Ph.D. students must successfully complete a qualifying examination and submit a written proposal to an appropriate faculty committee. Individual departments may or may not require an undergraduate engineering degree for admission into their particular graduate program. Other requirements may vary by individual engineering department. GRE and TOEFL requirements differ for each individual department.

Must complete one academic year or 72 units on campus.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Up to 24 units (two courses) of graduate work completed at other universities with a QPA of 3.0 or better may be given transfer credit, provided that such course work is part of the graduate program leading to the degree sought. Such transfer credit is not granted prior to admission to the graduate program, and must be approved by the department after the student has satisfactorily completed at least 36 units of graduate courses at Carnegie Mellon. This policy may differ by department or program.
