Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The College of Engineering includes the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering and the Division of Materials Science & Engineering and the Division of Systems Engineering.

The College of Engineering offers ABET accredited BS degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

There are a variety of programs available to undergraduates, including: optional concentrations in Energy Technologies, Nanotechnology, Technology Innovation, Aerospace Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering; minors in biomedical, computer, electrical, materials science and engineering, mechanical, systems engineering; study abroad opportunities include a semester program for juniors as well as a specially designed program for second semester sophomores to seamlessly incorporate an abroad experience while continuing normal progress toward the degree without additional cost; the MMEDIC Program enables students interested in attending medical school to pursue an integrated curriculum and be admitted to the Boston University Medical School at the end of the sophomore year; the B.U. Dual Degree Program enables students to complete a second undergraduate degree at another school or college at Boston University. In addition, all students complete a required sophomore year Introduction to Engineering Design course in the Engineering Product Innovation Center (EPIC). Participation in the optional co-op program enables students to augment their coursework with practical experience in the workplace. The College of Engineering offers opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research through a variety of College and University programs.

The College of Engineering offers Master's of Science (MS) degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Global Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Photonics, and Systems Engineering; Master's of Engineering (MEng) degrees in Biomedical, Computer, Electrical, Manufacturing, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical, Photonics, Systems Engineering. All master’s students have the option of completing interdisciplinary specializations in Data Analytics, Cybersecurity or Robotics. All master's students can also incorporate an internship into their program of study to earn a "with Engineering Practice" degree designation.

The College of Engineering also offers the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering.

The graduate programs offer numerous research opportunities in each of the College's three departments and two Divisions. Research opportunities also are available in the many research centers affiliated with the College, including the Photonics Center, the Center for Information Systems Engineering, the Center for Nanoscience and Nano-biotechnology, the Biomolecular Engineering Research Center, the Biological Design Center, the Hearing Research Center, the Center for Space Physics, and the Center for Computational Science.

The Intercollegiate Program in Bioinformatics, offered jointly by the College of Engineering and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, integrates mathematics, computation, engineering, and the biological sciences. Through coursework, collaborative training projects, industrial co-op, and MS and PhD dissertation research, students learn to apply analytic and computational methods and information technologies to current problems in biology, chemistry, and biomedical engineering.

The Late Entry Accelerated Program (LEAP) is designed for students with at least a bachelor's degree in the liberal arts, the sciences, or another field who are interested in pursuing an engineering masters degree. LEAP students first complete a non-degree sequence of foundational engineering courses at the undergraduate level. Students who succeed in the first phase of the program continue to one of the regular masters degree programs offered by the College of Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a complete MS degree via its Office of Distance Learning and a dual MS/MBA program in collaboration with Boston University's Questrom School of Business.
