Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The BS degree required semester hour's completion is 128 hours for Aerospace Engineering, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and 130 hours for Civil Engineering. The last 32 hours must be completed in residence. In addition to meeting the quality-point requirements of the University, candidates must have no less than a 2.00 cumulative QPA on all courses taken at Mississippi State University and applied to meeting degree requirements. Some departments also have additional program QPA requirements.

Master's Degree Requirements

All master’s degrees at MSU must have a minimum of 30 semester hours. Thesis-option students must include at least 24 hours of graduate coursework (at least 12 hours must be at the 8000 level) and 6 hours of research/thesis. Programs of study for non-thesis option students must consist of at least 15 hours of coursework at the 8000 level. Transfer credit can constitute up to 9 semester hours of coursework towards these requirements. A GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale is required. No more than two grades of “C” will be accepted for graduate credit and no grade of D or lower should appear on the program of study.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

Mississippi State University requires that doctoral students earn at least 54 hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor's level. Of the 54 hours, 24 must be from GPA-graded graduate coursework with a minimum of 12 credit hours at the 8000 level or higher (excluding dissertation research credit), and at least 20 must be dissertation research credits. Highly qualified undergraduate students may be directly admitted to the Ph.D. for some programs. At the doctoral level, transfer credit cannot exceed one-half of the coursework requirement. All dissertation credit hours must be taken at MSU. Some departments require doctoral students to take a qualifying examination. Comprehensive/preliminary examinations are required of all students. All candidates for the Ph.D. must submit a dissertation that exhibits mastery of the techniques of research and a distinct contribution to the field under investigation and study. Both a public presentation of the dissertation research and a dissertation defense are required. A GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale is required. No more than two grades of “C” will be accepted for graduate credit and no grade of D or lower should appear on the program of study.
