Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

For unconditional admission, a student is required (1) to have earned a minimum average of B in all undergraduate work attempted and in all engineering courses, (2) to have scored at least 145 Verbal and 155 quantitative on the GRE test or have passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination, and (3) applicants graduating from U.S. institutions must have received a bachelor's degree in an engineering curriculum accredited by ABET, Inc., when the degree was conferred, or applicants graduating from international institutions must have received a bachelor's degree in an engineering curriculum. Exceptions to (3) are permissible for students in the Master of Science in Operations Research degree program. Outstanding (3.5 GPA) students from other technical fields may gain admittance to the College of Engineering by completing certain undergraduate courses. More information is available at

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Admission requirements vary between engineering departments. Please consult the department of interest.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

A score of 500 on the TOEFL, 173 on the TOEFL Computer-Based Test, or a score of 80 on the TOEFL Internet-Based Test.

Residency Requirements

The student or student's supporting person must be a resident of the state of Alabama, or one of the following Tennessee counties: Bedford, Coffee, Franklin, Giles, Lawrence, Marion, Marshall, and Moore, for at least one year immediately preceding the date of registration. Other circumstances, such as employment status or active full-time military duty, may also qualify a student as a resident. Residence at UAH as a doctoral student is required for one year.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

With permission of the major department, students may transfer up to twelve semester hours of acceptable graduate credit earned at an approved institution and count it toward a master's degree. Ph.D. students should contact the appropriate engineering department to ascertain transfer credit potential toward the Ph.D. degree requirements. Such credit is transferred with approval of the major department if the student (1) was enrolled in a graduate program at the time the coursework was taken and (2) has an overall average of B or better in graduate work at the institution.
