Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The twelve Bachelor's degree programs in Engineering emphasize design and practical application of engineering principles. Graduates are well prepared for careers as professional engineers or for graduate studies. A maximum of 128 semester hours is required for the B.S. degree. Breadth and depth options are included in each of these programs. Some undergraduate degree programs have a progression requirement. The Undergraduate Catalog of the University of Tennessee should be consulted for detailed information on degree requirements.

Master's Degree Requirements

Master's with thesis - GPA required: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Credit hours required for degree: 30. Master's with courses only - GPA required: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Credit hours required for degree: 30-33. Other requirements, including written/oral examinations, vary depending on the major department.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

GPA required: 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Credit hours required for degree: 72 hours beyond the B.S. excluding M.S. thesis. Dissertation may be completed in absentia. Residency requirement: 1 year. Comprehensive written and oral examinations must be passed.
