Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Total units required for the bachelor's degrees offered by the College of Engineering and Computer Science are as follows: Civil Engineering - 138 units which include 60 major units and general education courses, and 46 pre-major and general education units. Computer Engineering - 137 units which include 101 major units. Computer Science - 129 units which include 87-90 units in the major in addition to general education and electives. Construction Management - 132 units which include 33 pre-major units, 42 upper-division major units, and 24 units for the Business minor. Electrical & Electronic Engineering - 134 units which include 57 major units and 44 pre-major units. Mechanical Engineering - 129 units which include 65 major units and 64 pre-major units. All engineering students must meet the University's general education requirements as well as requirements of the program's appropriate accrediting agency: for Engineering majors, the agency is the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (EAC); for Computer Science majors, the agency is the Computer Science Accreditation Commission of ABET (CAC); for Construction Management, the agency is the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE). All students whose catalog is Fall 1992 or later are required to meet a foreign language proficiency requirement for the baccalaureate degree, which may require additional units.

Master's Degree Requirements

All master's degrees in the College of Engineering and Computer Science require a minimum of 30 units of coursework with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Only those courses completed within seven years prior to date of graduation will satisfy course requirements. Civil Engineering - The M.S. degree includes research or independent study and units required in area of concentration; culminating requirement is 3-6 units of Master's Thesis, Master's Project, or Directed Study and Comprehensive Exam. Computer Engineering - Culminating requirement is 5 units of Master's Thesis, 2 units of Master's Project, or a comprehensive examination. Computer Science - At least 21 units must be in 200-level and 500-level courses; culminating requirement is either 2-5 units of Master's Thesis or 2 units of Master's Project. Software Engineering (Computer Science) - culminating requirement is 2-5 units of project or thesis. Electrical & Electronic Engineering - Culminating requirement is 5 units of Master's Thesis, 2 units of Master's Project, or a comprehensive examination. Mechanical Engineering - Culminating requirement is 4-6 units of Master's Thesis. All students must also pass the Writing Placement for Graduate Studies (WPG) exam, take a Graduate Writing Intensive course in their discipline within the first two semesters of coursework at California State University Sacramento, or secure approval for a WPG waiver.
