Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Applications for admission are encouraged from all persons with a genuine interest in advanced engineering study. Each application is judged on its own merits.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

For the applicant who is a recent graduate with a degree from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), admission is granted on the basis of the undergraduate scholastic record, and usually an applicant with cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0 or better will be granted admission. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required by most departments. Applicants should check each program's specific requirements.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

International student applications are processed for academic qualifications by the Swanson School of Engineering and for non-academic qualifications by the Office of International Services. For authorization of a student visa for a non-citizen an applicant is required to have adequate financial resources, be proficient in English and satisfy the legal requirements for an F1 or J1 visa. Minimum TOEFL score of 550 (213 computer-based, 80 internet-based) is required.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Entrance requirements do not differ for non-resident students.

Residency Requirements

Students seeking the Ph.D. degree are required to engage in a minimum of one term of full-time doctoral study, which excludes any other employment except as approved by their departments.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

The application is treated in the same way as a new application, and the same procedure for application is followed. This includes the transfer into an engineering graduate program from another school in the University of Pittsburgh.
