Student Design Projects Description

Student design projects are completed in freshman design courses and other disciplinary design courses, culminating in a capstone engineering design experience. Many of these senior-level design projects are industry-sponsored, all are team-based designs, and many are multi-disciplinary teams. Student projects completed for competitions include: concrete canoe, robotics, hybrid-electric vehicle, human powered vehicles, and others.

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture provides instruction, research, and public service in engineering, architecture, construction management, computer science, and materials science. The college's undergraduate degree programs prepare graduates for both professional careers and advanced study and are known for their practical, hands-on components coupled with a strong foundation of basic principles. The college's programs use formal classroom instruction, coupled with individual and group projects, seminars, and individually directed studies to prepare students to develop solutions that are technically, socially, and economically appropriate. Many students also gain work experience in their fields of interest through employment on college research projects or internships in industry.
Faculty, graduate students and staff in the college perform basic and applied research addressing problems of state, national, and international importance. Research projects are designed to enhance economically, ecologically and culturally sound use of our material resources and to promote well-balanced industrial and professional development. Research is an integral part of graduate degree programs, providing graduate project topics and opportunities for graduate student interactions with outside professionals. The college's research also strengthens its undergraduate programs by involving undergraduate students in relevant creative exploration and by keeping undergraduate course content current with the latest research developments.
The college provides important educational services to industries, professions, and the general public. Short courses, conferences, and workshops taught by college faculty produce valuable interactions among professionals and deliver current technical information to these audiences. Faculty of the college also serve as editors, authors, and reviewers for professional journals serving the nation and the world.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Students must apply to an engineering program for certification in that major before being allowed to complete upper division courses in the major. Prerequisites to certification are the completion of a set of pre-engineering courses. Students are certified based on a capacity for the program and their academic performance in the set of pre-engineering courses.

Residency Requirements

The maximum transfer credit allowed from accredited two-year community or junior colleges is 73 semester hours of lower division credit. The maximum allowable credit from a four-year institution, or from a combination of all institutions, is 90 semester hours.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Students can transfer only courses for which the cummulative GPA is 2.0 or higher. Transfer students must also apply to an engineering program for certification into that major before being allowed to complete upper division courses in the major.

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Prospective students must have received a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

An undergraduate gpa ave of 3.0 over the last 60 semester hours of graded coursework is a minimum. A 3.4 in graduate level courses is required for most PhD programs. The GRE is required for admission by some programs and the GMAT for Engineering Management is required. Official transcripts and letters of recommendation are needed.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

The residence requirement for the master's degree is one academic year. Two years of residence at Washington State University is required for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.

Department of Biological Systems Engineering

Research in processing of agricultural products after harvest, including reduction of impact bruising of fruits and vegetables, the use of nonthermal methods(pulsed electric fields, high hydrostatic pressure, and oscillating magnetic fields) to process foods, the use of microwave and radio frequency energy to process foods, and computer modeling of food processing. Also, substantial research in aquaculture, in precision farming, and in developing a research program in bioengineering in cooperation with other departments in other colleges on campus.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

The scientific advancement, sustainable design, and preservation of our nation's infrastructure, which is the essence of the civil and environmental engineering professions, requires a fundamental grounding in physics, mathematics and chemistry. At Washington State University we offer the following programs of concentrations in Civil and Environmental Engineering: environmental; geotechnical; hydraulics; materials; structural; transportation; and water resources.

The ENCS houses three degree programs: Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Center for Bioplastics and Biocomposites

Biocomposites, including fiber synthesis, biobased resin systems and biobased fiber systems; self-healing composites; fiber production from lignin; Commercialization of bioplastic products, including composting, product labeling and economic analysis; Melt processing, extrusion, and molding as well as secondary operations such as cutting, welding and coating; Modelling of energy and mass transfer for employed processing techniques such as extrusion and injection molding

Center for Environmental Research, Education, and Outreach (CEREO)

Faculty conduct research, education and outreach on major environmental issues. They take an interdisciplinary approach involving collaboration among engineers and scientists from physical, natural, and social sciences. Approximately 350 faculty from Engineering, Architecture, Arts and Sciences, Communication and Agriculture participate in this Center.

Center for Materials Research

Research is carried out on deformation of metals, fracture of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, fatigue, phase transformations as affected by surfaces, numerical simulation of atomistic processes, thin films ceramic systems.

Composite Materials & Engineering Center

The Composite Materials and Engineering Center (CMEC) is an interdisciplinary research organization with programs to develop new infrastructure materials and manufacturing technologies from a range of recycled and renewable resources. We also develop innovative structural systems and design methods to effectively utilize new materials while maintaining economic viability and protecting public safety. Innovative research is underway to develop technologies that will provide liquid fuels as well as renewable versions of platform chemicals, polymers and nanotechnologies. We are also an international accreditation service (IAS) accredited testing facility and provide evaluation reports to clients through our service centers.

Energy Systems Innovation Center

The ESI Center brings together research faculty, industry leaders, and governmental organizations to address one of the world's most pressing technological challenges - demand for clean, reliable energy. The center consists of more than 30 WSU faculty members in the core areas of power, energy, and computer science as well as numerous members in sociology, economics, psychology, and public policy working together across disciplines to bridge the gap between science and society. The center collaborates with a wide range of government and industry partners to provide a qualified, capable power engineering workforce for electric utilities and related businesses, as well as offering an on-line master's degree in power engineering for working professionals.

Transportation Research Center

The TRAC is a cooperative research center with offices at WSU, the Washington State Department of Transportation and the University of Washington. TRAC provides a link among the government, university researchers, and the private sector. Much of our research is funded by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and TRAC acts as a liaison, connecting those who need applied research at WSDOT with those best suited to conduct it at the universities.

W.M. Keck Biomedical Materials Research Lab

Our bioengineering research is focused in two broad areas " materials and structures for implants and drug delivery, and micromachined ultrasonic transducers in biomedical imaging and therapeutics. Our implants and drug delivery research is focused in three broad areas " (A) materials and structures for next generation load bearing implants, (B) nanoscalse resorbable ceramics in tissue engineering and drug delivery and (C) surface modification for improving cell materials interactions.

Washington Center for Asphalt Technology

Faculty conduct research focused on fundamental and practical characterization and development of sustainable infrastructure materials, especially on asphalt and other construction materials. Approximately 10 faculty from Civil, Environmental, Mechanical and Material Science and Engineering participate in this Center.
