Entrance Requirements and Recommendations

Our faculty review committee employs a holistic approach to the evaluation of applicants to our graduate programs. All applicants are evaluated on the basis of past academic performance, letters of support, and personal accomplishments. GRE scores are required for graduate admissions and we require the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for any applicant whose first language is not English. Students may submit the IELTS test in lieu of the TOEFL.

All undergraduate students at the University (except those admitted to the Eastman School of Music) are formally enrolled in the College. At the end of the sophomore year, they are expected to apply for admission to a specific degree program (or “concentration”).

Graduate Programs: Each department determines whether applicants have sufficient preparation to enter a given program, emphasizing the quality of their preparation rather than the particular academic program they completed or the credits they earned. Substantial background in proposed field of study, research experience, and letters of recommendation from faculty members help determine a prospective student's level of preparation.
