Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The College of Engineering and Mines offers four-year undergraduate programs in civil, electrical, mechanical, geological, mining, and petroleum engineering; and computer science accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Emphasis is upon northern engineering problems and principles. Alaska's vast natural resources provide many opportunities for students in these programs. Class sizes are small and the faculty are readily available. The College of Engineering and Mines also offers graduate programs in arctic, electrical, civil, environmental, management, mechanical, geological, mining, and petroleum engineering; and computer science. Its main research facility is the Institute of Northern Engineering, which includes the following research facilities: Advanced System Security Education, Research, and Training Center, The AK Center of Energy and Power, The AK University Transportation Center, The Water and Environmental Research Center, The Petroleum Development Laboratory, and The Mineral Industry Research Laboratory.
