Undergraduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Freshman applicants must meet the University subject, Scholarship and examination requirements as indicated in the section on College Admission Information.
Mathematics -- 3 years required, 4 years recommended -- Three years of college-preparatory mathematics that include the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two and three-dimensional geometry.
Laboratory Science -- 2 years required, 3 years recommended -- fundamental knowledge in at least two of these foundational subjects: biology, chemistry and physics.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Applicants usually select a major within the school when applying for admission. There is also the option of applying to undeclared engineering There are no additional or special requirements for freshman admission to any of the majors in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

To be considered for admission to UCLA, international students must have completed secondary school with a superior average in academic subjects and have earned a certificate of completion which enables the student to be admitted to a university in the home country.

Students who have attended school under the British system must present five GCSE/Ordinary-Level examinations with superior grades. Results of Advanced-Supplementary or Higher-Level exams should also be submitted.

UCLA requires one of the following English proficiency exams from all international students coming from non-English speaking countries:
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a score of 7 or higher on the academic module OR
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of 83 or higher on the Internet-based test or a score of 550 or higher on the paper-based test.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Entrance requrements are the same as for resident students.

Residency Requirements

Of the last 48 units completed for the bachelor's degree, 36 must be earned in residence in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA. No more than 16 of the 36 units may be completed in Summer Sessions at UCLA.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

The following requirements are for transfer applicants who are applying to majors in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. Applicants must have completed the following prior to enrolling at UCLA: 90 quarter units (60 semester units) of transferrable college credit with a grade point average of at least 3.3; two transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units) in English composition; one transferable college course (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units) from the arts and humanities, or social and behavioral sciences; 2.5 years of mathematics beginning with calculus and including multivariable calculus, linear algebra and differential equations, one and a half years of calculus based physics including mechanics, electricity and magnetism, heat and waves, one year of general chemistry (or less, depending on the curriculum), and one course in computer programming in C++, C, or Java.
