Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

The B.S. program in the School of Engineering and Applied Science requires 180 to 185 quarter units, depending on the major and the major option selected. In addition to the University requirement that students must earn at least a C (2.0) grade-point average in all courses taken at any University of California campus, at least a 2.0 grade-point average must be achieved in all upper division University courses offered in satisfaction of the subject and elective requirements of the curriculum. A 2.0 minimum grade-point average in upper division mathematics, upper division core courses, and the major field is also required for graduation. Of the last 48 units completed for the Bachelor's degree, 36 must be earned in residence.

Master's Degree Requirements

A 3.00 GPA is required for all courses taken in graduate
standing, all graduate-level courses, and all courses taken
for the degree. The thesis plan requires seven formal
courses and a thesis, which may be written while the student
is enrolled in two individual study courses. The
comprehensive examination plan requires nine formal courses
and a comprehensive examination or a project. The minimum
requirement for academic residency is one academic year or
three quarters. The thesis may be completed in absentia.
There is no foreign language requirement.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

A 3.25 GPA is required for all courses taken in graduate
standing and for all courses taken for the degree. The basic program of study is usually built around one major field and two minor fields. Students must satisfy the preliminary examination requirements of their majors and must pass an Oral Qualifying Examination in order to advance to candidacy. Students are required to write a dissertation, and a final oral examination may also be required, depending upon the major. The minimum residency requirement is two academic years or six quarters. The dissertation must be completed in residency. There is no foreign language requirement.
