Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

The College of Engineering has no additional requirements above and beyond the University's requirements for graduate study admission. A non-refundable application fee of $60.00 for on-line or paper applications applies to all students. To be granted regular admission the student must hold a 4-year baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution and have demonstrated potential for graduate study. The standard academic requirement is a B average (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better for the last two years of undergraduate or graduate work. Provisional admission may be granted to a student who:
1) has less than a 3.0 GPA in undergraduate work; 2) has made a major change in his/her subject of specialization but has shown potential for graduate study; 3) has low GRE scores; or 4) lacks certain basic undergraduate courses in his/her major field.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for all students. A minimum GRE score of 1420 (GRE Verbal >420; GRE Quantitative plus Analytical >1000) is required for admission to M.S. programs in the College of Engineering. The GRE requirement for admission to the Ph.D. program is a score equal to or >1700 (sum of Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical).

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

No additional departmental requirements.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

In addition to meeting University, College of Engineering and departmental requirements for graduate study admission, international students must also meet the following requirements: 1) official transcripts reflecting all baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate work with official English translation 2) official degree certificate from each college or university from which a degree was received with official English translations 3) minimum TOEFL score of 550 Paper/213 Computer/80 Internet, or IELTS 7.0 for M.S. programs; 4) three letters of recommendation and the students personal statement and resume, and 5) all international students must submit an International Student Financial Certificate including proof of available funds.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

There are no additional admission requirements for non-resident graduate students.

Residency Requirements

The College of Engineering has no requirements above and beyond those of the University, which require that masters degree candidates must complete a minimum of two-thirds of the required credits of course work on the campus of MSU, and that doctoral degree candidates must complete 30 credits (applicable to the degree) on the campus of MSU.
