Research Description By Graduate Engineering Department

Atmospheric Science

Studies of aerosols and trace gas composition and properties and their atmospheric processing and effects. Climate process studies, general circulation modeling, climate variability and global climate change. Research on planetary radiation (infrared and shortwave radiation processes), satellite remote sensing of clouds and precipitation, radar remote sensing of clouds and precipitation and theoretical studies. Effects of orography, mesoscale and cloud modeling, severe thunderstorms, midlatitude winter storms. Hurricanes and tropical storms, marine boundary layer, ocean-atmosphere interaction, stratocumulus cloud systems, and tropical convection. Extreme precipitation events. Global hydrologic cycle. Ocean circulation and dynamics. Global carbon cycle.

Biomedical Engineering

The graduate programs in bioengineering integrate physical, chemical and mathematical sciences with engineering principles and clinical studies.

Chemical & Biological Engineering

The graduate program in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CBE) offers students a broad range of cutting-edge research areas led by faculty who are world renowned experts in their respective fields. Opportunities for collaboration with many other department across the University are abundant, including departments in the Colleges of Engineering, Natural Sciences, and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering houses state-of-the art research labs. Research encompasses Bioanalytical Chemistry, Biofuels and Biorefining, Biomaterials, Cell and Tissue Engineering, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Membrane Science, Microfluidics, Polymer Science and Synthetic and Systems Biology.

Civil & Environmental Engineering

The civil engineering faculty conduct a large research program that encompasses several areas of specialization including environmental engineering, fluid mechanics and wind engineering, geotechnical engineering, groundwater/environmental hydrogeology, hydraulic engineering, hydrologic science and engineering, space civil engineering, structural engineering and solid mechanics, transportation, and water resources planning and management.

Electrical & Computer Engineering

ECE courses and research span the following disciplines: biomedical engineering; communication and signal processing; computer engineering; control and robotics; electric power and energy systems; electromagnetics and remote sensing; lasers, optics, and applications; and systems engineering.

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is active in a number of globally significant research areas including energy and environment; biomedical engineering; advanced materials; laser applications, aerospace; and systems engineering. Research laboratories in each of these areas are available for undergraduate and graduate students to perform research, build devices, perform experiments, and develop and refine prototypes. Current projects include biofuels, pollutant formation and control, medical device modeling and development, neural and liver tissue engineering, hybrid and fuel cell systems, photovoltaic cell manufacturing, and broad beam ion sources for space propulsion. The department is home to two CSU programs of Research and Scholarly Excellence -- the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory and the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Research Laboratory.

Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA)

An interdisciplinary effort with the Department of Atmospheric Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, CASA focuses on improved methods for detecting and predicting dangerous weather using networks of radars.

Center for Contaminant Hydrology (CCH)

CCH is a nationally recognized program focused on finding innovative solutions for inadvertant release of contaminants to subsurface environments. Key attributes of the program include interdisciplinary studies, close collaboration with sponsors, collaboration with other academic programs, a focus on field scale studies, and innovation.

Center for Excellence for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning

The Center of Excellence for Risk-Based Community Resilience Planning at Colorado State University, funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will accelerate the development of system-level models and databases that will provide the technology for enhancing community resilience in a research and development program involving three major thrusts. In addition to faculty at CSU, the team members include noted experts in resilience from the University of Oklahoma, Oregon State University, Rice University, Texas A&M University, the University of Illinois, the University of Washington, the University of South Alabama, and two minority serving institutions, California Polytechnic University, Pomona and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The decision framework created in the Center will provide a unique set of science-based measurement tools, supported by fully integrated databases and risk-informed decision methods, to optimize the design and management of individual facilities and interdependent community infrastructure systems so as to achieve resilience goals while managing life-cycle costs, thus making it possible to establish, for the first time, a business case for achieving community resilience.

Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Science and Technology (EUV)

The EUV center is developing laser technologies to help create the smallest, most powerful computer circuits ever generated, as well as other advanced nanotechnologies of critical importance to the national economy.

Center for Sustainable and Intelligent Transportation Systems (CSITS)

CSITS conducts multi-disciplinary research, education and outreach on promoting the sustainability of critical transportation infrastructure systems subjected to normal and hazardous conditions.

Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA)

Conducts interdisciplinary research in the atmospheric sciences by entraining skills beyond the meteorological disciplines, exploiting advances in engineering and computer science, facilitating transitional activity between pure and applied research, leveraging both national and international resources and partnerships, and assisting NOAA, Colorado State University, the State of Colorado, and the Nation through the application of our research to areas of societal benefit.

Earth System Modeling and Education Institute (ESMEI)

ESMEI engages in earth system modeling with an atmospheric focus, and welcomes interdisciplinary collaboration to explore novel and existing research problems and to optimize education efforts. ESMEI is housed at the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University and receives base funding from the department, the College of Engineering and the CSU Vice President for Research.

Engineering Research Center (ERC)

The ERC is an 110,000-square-foot research facility supporting faculty and student projects in civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering.

Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory (EECL)

The EECL is now entering its second decade of delivering significant, meaningful solutions to meet the global energy challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century, providing our students and researchers the experience and tools for a lifetime of contribution. With a focus towards market driven solutions, products developed at the EECL in partnership with our Industrial Sponsors have reduced pollution in the atmosphere by millions of tons and have saved over 14 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

Hydraulic Research Laboratory

A world-class facility comprised of flumes and associated equipment for hydraulic model studies and hydraulic research. Supports research, trains undergraduate and graduate students and provides hydraulic testing and support services.

Information Science and Technology Center (ISTeC)

ISTeC is a university-wide organization for promoting, facilitating, and enhancing CSU's research, education, and outreach activities pertaining to the design and innovative application of computer, communication, and information systems.

Mountain Plains Consortium (MPC)

The Mountain-Plains Consortium (MPC), is one of 10 University Transportation Centers sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The MPC is the center for Region VIII and a national resource and focal point for the support of research and training concerning the transportation infrastructure and the movement of passengers and freight.

One Water Solutions Institute (OWSI)

The One Water Solutions Institute at Colorado State University serves as a hub for a number of laboratories and research centers. OWSI explores various research interests ranging from urban water management and graywater use to watershed assessments and nutrient pollution. OWSI serves as a common thread weaving interdisciplinary research with stakeholder needs and sustainable water management solutions.

Sustainable Bioenergy Development Center (SBDC)

Several factors are driving the search for sustainable alternative energy sources: projections of increased demand and decreased supply of petroleum, concerns about increasing greenhouse gas levels, and the desire for increased domestic energy production. Colorado State University has created the Sustainable Bioenergy Development Center (SBDC) to address these needs and achieve the goal of energy production that is economically and environmentally sustainable.
