Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

Admission to the College of Engineering graduate program is the dual responsibility of the Engineering Graduate Studies Committee and the Ohio State Graduate School, which has the final authority for making admission decisions.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Graduate Admissions minimum academic criteria:
• Credentials documenting prerequisite academic work that gives evidence of ability to pursue a graduate program in your chosen area.
• An earned 4-year baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited institution.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0/4.0
• Required submission of GRE or GMAT scores if undergraduate or graduate GPA is below the minimum of 3.0 or if degree is from an unaccredited institution.
Additional criteria published by the Graduate Studies Committee of the local program.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

For International Applicants and those who have held the status of U.S. Permanent Resident for less than one year.
Applicants whose native language is not English, must submit a recent, official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) score. Minimum English Proficiency Requirements are as follows:
• at least 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or
• at least 79 on the internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or
• at least 82 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) or
• at least a 7.0 on the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) exam
Applicants who are citizens of, or who have received a bachelor's degree or higher from one of the following countries are exempt from the English proficiency requirement: Australia, Belize, the British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States, and Wales.

Residency Requirements

Master's: Completion of a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours is required to earn a master’s degree. Eighty (80) percent of those required credit hours must be completed at this university over a period of at least two semesters.

Doctoral: Minimum overall GPA 3.0/4.0 for all graduate credit hours completed at this university. Satisfactory completion of the candidacy examination. Doctoral students who achieve candidacy must be enrolled in at least three credits every semester of their candidacy (summer term excluded) until graduation. Satisfactory completion of final oral examination. Submission of the approved dissertation and abstract. Completion of the Ph.D. requirements established by the department Graduate Studies Committee (specific requirements and options vary by program). Completion of doctoral degree requirements within 5 years after being admitted to candidacy. Minimum of 80 graduate semester credit hours, at least 50 of which must be completed beyond the master’s degree, and of which at least 24 must be taken at this university.

Admissions Requirements for Transfer Students

Same as non-transfer
