Degree Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Requirements

A student will be granted a Bachelor of Applied Science only after obtaining credit for all courses listed in the program of study for a given engineering program. This requirement will normally be met by completing four Winter Sessions with full credit load (five Winter Sessions for the Engineering Physics Program). With the approval of the Dean's Office, a student may be allowed to study on a part-time basis. Credit will be granted for courses completed during the Summer Session.
A student transferring from an engineering program at another university or from a science faculty may be granted transfer credit for courses if the student has completed courses of equivalent content.

Master's Degree Requirements

Master's Degree Requirements

The Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.) degree requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of 30 credits, including a 12-credit thesis. At least 18 credits must be coursework, with at least 12 of these completed at the 500 level. Normally, at least 12 of the 18 coursework credits must be in Engineering courses. A student's selection of courses is made in consultation with their supervisor(s) to suit research or career interests. The coursework completed must satisfy the advisory committee prior to graduation. It usually takes 18"24 months of full-time study to complete the coursework and thesis requirements of the M.A.Sc. program.

The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree requires a minimum of 30 credits of coursework, at least 24 of which must be at the 500 level, with at least 12 of the 24 in a preferred discipline. A student's selection of courses is made in consultation with the program to suit career interests, and requires the approval of the program. During a transition period expected to last the next several years, a number of graduate courses will be delivered in collaboration with the UBC Vancouver campus component of the Faculty of Applied Science, either in Vancouver or in Kelowna, or by distance.A typical completion time for full-time students taking the M.Eng. program is 20"24 months (5-6 terms), depending on the number of courses the student undertakes per each term.

Doctoral Degree Requirements

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program requires the completion of required coursework, a qualifying examination, the development and defence of a research thesis proposal, and the completion of a research thesis. The number of credits of coursework required depends on the background of the student entering the program and the nature of the intended research project. Selection of courses is made in consultation with the supervisor(s). The coursework completed must satisfy the advisory committee prior to graduation.
It usually takes 36"48 months of full-time study to complete the coursework and thesis requirements of the Ph.D. program. For further program information, see Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
