Other Student Support Programs

Orientation is essential in assisting new students with their transition to college and to UTSA. All freshmen and freshman transfers with 29 or fewer college credit hours participate in a mandatory Orientation to register for their first-semester classes. During Orientation, new students meet with an academic advisor to plan a class schedule, learn about UTSA's campus services and programs, and meet a variety of people ranging from faculty and administrators to other new and current UTSA students.

UTSA Roadrunner Camp exists to help freshmen become successful college students. Students get the most out of college when they: are aware of personal values and their importance in daily life; develop friendships with peers, staff, and faculty; know the benefits of and opportunities for leadership and involvement; understand the value of diversity; and have pride in the tradition, spirit, and heritage of UTSA. In a two-day program of events, we support personal, social, and academic excellence. By planning activities in a fun environment where students can be themselves and interact with others, we give freshmen a good start on their new journey.

Transfer transition programs are available for all new transfer students. The programs include a campus tour, sessions on campus services, and information about University policies, procedures and the core curriculum. Academic advising and registration is also included. Orientation for transfer students with 30 or more hours is not required but strongly recommended.

UTSA also offers Family Orientation programs because sending a student to college can be a transition for family members as well. These half-day programs include a tour of the campus, information about UTSA services and resources, helpful publications, and interaction with faculty and staff.

All first-year students will complete the Academic Inquiry & Scholarship Pathways Course. In the AIS course students will participate in major & career exploration,
engage in a signature experience within an academic pathway, further develop critical thinking skills, further develop Leadership & Academic Success Skills
Participate in dialogue with the AIS Academic Pathways Instructor, Teaching Assistant (TA), and Peer Mentor (PM) and fellow first-year students

The Tomas Rivera Center (TRC) is an academic support unit dedicated to providing services that will promote student success from Academic Advising, Learning Assistance, and Supplemental Instruction to specialized Retention Programs such as Checkpoint, Phoenix and the Academic Development Program. The TRC is committed to helping students make the grade as college students. "Students come first."
The academic support programs include: Supplemental Instruction, Non Course Based Developmental Education (NCB), Learning Assistance / Tutoring, Learning Programs, Expert Learner Workshops, TASP/THEA Workshop, Learning Communities For Freshmen.

Student Projects

Student Design Projects Description

Design is integrated throughout the curriculum.

Design in Biomedical Engineering begins with the freshman course, BME 1002, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering. Throughout the rest of the program, students will be introducted to different aspects of design either through any of the BME lab courses or through clinical internships (BME 3013) and BME 3022, BME Technology and Product Development course. Towards the end of the program, students will be required complete their 2 semester Senior Design courses (BME 4903 and BME 4913). These senior design courses serves to demonstrate the culmination of the students' educational experience. Typically made of 4 senior BME students, partnership with senior students from other engineering programs within UTSA as well as partnership with a business student are also encouraged. The design teams are also encouraged to partner with other engineering or business students to bring interdisciplinary and business focus to engineering design process, including entering the Student Technology Venture Competition to gain experience as early stage entrepreneurs.

In Civil Engineering, design starts with a freshman introductory course, CE 1301 Introduction to Civil Engineering, and ends with the capstone senior design CE 4813 Civil Engineering Design. Design components are contained in most required engineering topics courses. These include CE 3213 Reinforced Concrete Design, CE 3233 Steel Design, CE 3413 Geotechnical Engineering, CE 4413 Foundation Analysis and Design, and Applications, CE 3633 Water and Wastewater Treatment, CE 4723 Applied Hydrology, CE 4123 Highway Engineering, and CE 4603 Water Resources Engineering. Design also is included in many of the elective courses, including CE 4253 Introduction to Masonry and Design, CE 4233 Transportation Systems, and CE 4723 Hydraulic Systems Design. The design experience culminates in a major senior capstone design course, CE 4813 Civil Engineering Design. The capstone design project is multi-disciplinary in that it involves three or more civil engineering areas and draws upon most prior coursework. The course involves teamwork, both oral and written presentations, a final design report, and a formal presentation in front of a panel of registered engineers.

In Electrical and Computer Engineering the student design experience is integrated throughout the two programs. Modern software tools usage, design and analysis, and formal report writing are some of integrated components the electrical and computer engineering courses. EE 3113 Electrical Engineering Laboratory I and EE 4113 Electrical Engineering Laboratory II emphasize hands-on experiments using basic to advanced instruments and require students to submit both formal and informal reports. Other electrical engineering classes that use software tools include EE 3313 Electronic Circuits I, EE 3413 Analysis and Design of Control Systems, EE 3423 Signals and Systems I, EE 3463 Microcomputer Systems I, EE 3563 Digital Systems Design, and EE 4313 Electronic Circuits II. Engineering design is distributed throughout the curricula starting from the student's second semester in EE 2513 Logic Design. In the following semesters, students take EE 3563 Digital Systems Design (design and simulation of sequential digital systems), EE 3313 Electronic Circuits I, EE 3113 Electronics Laboratory I (with significant design components), EE 3413 Analysis and Design of Control Systems (analog control systems design), and EE 4313 Electronic Circuits II (design and analysis of advanced analog circuits), EE 4113 Electrical Engineering Laboratory II (complex circuit design, construction, and debugging, including printed circuit board design, layout, construction, and debugging). Students select five technical electives, all of which have some design components.

Senior Design I and II (EE/CpE 4811 & EE/CpE 4813) are capstone courses in electrical and computer engineering. Student design teams integrate their knowledge from the EE and CpE curricular with training in project management skills, communication and teamwork, and engineering decision making process with economic and environmental constraints (such as safety, reliability, environmental, economic, ethical and social impacts, etc.) when developing and implementing an engineering design project. The senior design demonstration is the culmination of their educational experience. Senior design teams are also encouraged to partner with other engineering or business students to bring interdisciplinary and business focus to engineering design process, including entering the Student Technology Venture Competition to gain experience as early stage entrepreneurs.

In Mechanical Engineering, students have opportunities to gain design experience in main stems within mechanical engineering: mechanics, materials and manufacturing of thermal/fluid (energy) system, and mechanical systems. Through required coursework, the mechanical engineering curriculum provides educational training in both stems. Through the selection of technical elective courses to augment required courses, students can develop some degree of specialization. Design experience is integrated throughout the program. Development of open-ended problem solving skills is a part of all mechanical engineering courses. Design projects with formal report writing are included in many of the required courses, including ME 1403 ME Practice & Graphics, ME 3823 Machine Element Design, ME 4293 Thermodynamic II, ME 4313 Heat Transfer and Rate Processes, and ME 4543 Mechatronics. A substantial portion of each technical elective course is devoted to design of systems and components. A capstone design sequence at the senior level provides an opportunity to apply and integrate the knowledge gained throughout the curriculum to the development of an instructor-approved project. The design of experiments is integrated in ME 4733 Mechanical Engineering Laboratory and the senior design course sequence.

In addition, opportunities exist for students to gain additional design experience by participating in projects offered by the technical societies. These include the SAE Formula I and Baja car competitions, and other competitions sponsored annually by SAE, ASME and ASHRAE.

College Description

Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

The College of Engineering offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. It also offers the Doctor of Philosophy degree programs in Environmental Sciences and Engineering (a joint program between colleges of Engineering and Sciences), Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering (a joint program between UTSA and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, UTHSCSA).

Each undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET). Individuals enrolling in these degree programs are given an opportunity to develop a strong background in the engineering sciences and to learn the analysis, design, and synthesis tools necessary to function well as actively participate in many traditional, and emerging areas of engineering.

The college has excellent laboratory facilities where students receive hands-on instruction by faculty. Computer-aided design (CAD) facilities, including state-of-the-art workstations, are routinely used in all programs. Some classes are taught by adjunct faculty from local industries, giving students the opportunity to interact with engineering professionals engaged in relevant engineering practice. Graduates from the College of Engineering should have excellent opportunities for employment and pursuit of graduate degrees.

The graduate programs offer opportunities for advanced study and research designed to prepare students for leadership roles in engineering careers in industry, government, or educational institutions. A master thesis option is recommended for students who are planning a career in research or who contemplate pursuing a doctorate in one of the engineering disciplines. A non-thesis Master of Science option is also available for students who desire a practical industrial applications-oriented degree.

In the semester the student completes 30 credit hours, the student will be evaluated for admission into the College of Engineering. The following are the pre-engineering admission requirements for freshmen or freshman transfer students (freshman transfers are transfer ­students who have earned fewer than 30 hours):

Qualify for enrollment in MAT 1214 Calculus I, or a higher level mathematics course
Qualify for enrollment in WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (Q) or higher

After successfully completing 30 semester credit hours of required courses, including MAT 1214 Calculus I and WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I (Q) with grades of “C-” or better, pre-engineering majors who have at least a 2.50 overall and STEM (math, science, and engineering) grade point average should meet with their assigned academic advisor to change their major from pre-engineering to a specific College of Engineering major.

Transfer Students

The following are the transfer requirements for direct admission to the College of Engineering for transfer students who have earned 30 or more credit hours:

Completed MAT 1214 Calculus I, or the equivalent with a grade of “C-” or better.
Meet grade point average requirements:
Have a transfer grade point average of at least 2.50 and a grade point average of at least 2.50 in all mathematics, sciences, and engineering coursework, or
Have a transfer grade point average of at least 2.25 and a grade point average of at least 2.25 in all mathematics, sciences, and engineering coursework, and be granted admission to the College of Engineering major by ­holistic review by the College.

Transfer students not admitted directly into the College of Engineering will be changed to Undeclared (UND) and must choose another major outside of engineering. Additional admission requirements are needed for the biomedical and chemical engineering majors and are listed under their respective program requirements.

Undergraduate Admission to an Engineering Department

Students who meet all admissions criteria either directly from high school or with transfer credits will be admitted into on of the following majors: biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, or mechanical engineering as a major. All students admitted to engineering majors should follow their major curriculum. Students may obtain additional information about each program from the College of Engineering website.

International Students
Applications from individuals who plan to enroll while residing in the United States on a non-immigrant visa are processed as international students. International students can apply by submitting the International Student ApplyTexas Application (electronic version).

All international students, including first-time freshmen and transfer students, must:

International First-Time Freshmen

Applicants for admission to UTSA as international first-time freshmen must:

Have qualifications equivalent to those of students entering from accredited secondary schools in the United States, as determined by the UTSA International Undergraduate Admissions.
Submit all application materials including application for admission, nonrefundable application fee, official secondary school transcripts/certificates, official SAT or ACT scores, official TOEFL or IELTS scores, and all supporting documents to International Undergraduate Admissions, Office of International Programs.

International undergraduate admission to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is offered to academically qualified international applicants. Completed applications are evaluated through an individual review process after all supporting admissions materials are received by the Office of International Programs, International Undergraduate Admissions. Students who are admitted to the university are not guaranteed admission to a specific academic program.

International Transfer Students

Transferring from Schools outside the United States:
International transfer students who have earned 30 or more transferable credit hours from an accredited college or university in a country other than the United States must have a 2.50 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale, as determined by International Undergraduate Admissions. A foreign credential evaluation is required for any non U.S. college, university or other post-secondary school transcript. Transfer Coursework

Upon admission, UTSA grants credit for college-level transfer coursework, earned with a grade of “D” or higher, from regionally-accredited colleges and universities. Applicability of such coursework toward the UTSA degree plan is at the discretion of the major academic department. Conditional Admission

Students who do not submit or earn scores that prove English proficiency but who meet all other admission requirements can be admitted to the Intensive English Program (IEP) on the condition that they are accepted to the bachelor’s degree program of their choice when the appropriate level of English proficiency has been achieved. Conditional admission is not available to graduate students. To apply for conditional admission follow the freshman or transfer admission process and apply through the International Student ApplyTexas Application.

Entrance Requirements for Non-Resident Students

Out-of-State. An out-of-state applicant must graduate from a high school accredited by that state's accreditation division. That division's mission and scope must be similar to that of the Texas Education Agency. UTSA will also consider the applications of students who graduate from a high school accredited by any of the regional accrediting associations similar to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Out-of-state applicants for admission who have graduated within five years of the date of first enrollment at UTSA and who have not attended another college or university must be in the top one-half of their graduating class. Minimum SAT or ACT scores must correspond to those required of in-state applicants whose class rank as determined by grade point average places them in the first or second quartile of their class.

Minimum UTSA Residence Requirements

The following minimum UTSA residence requirements are in ac­cor­d­­ance with requirements established for all institutions in The University of Texas System and are requirements for all bachelor’s degrees:

1. A minimum of 25 percent of the total number of semester credit hours required for a bachelor’s degree must be completed at UTSA before a degree can be conferred.

2. Twenty-four of the last 30 semester credit hours applied to the degree program must be completed in residence, with the exception that among University of Texas System components, a student may, with the approval of the appropriate dean, transfer additional coursework to the program at the degree-granting institution.

3. Of the minimum 39 upper-division semester credit hours required in all degree programs, 18 must be earned in UTSA courses.

4. At least 6 semester credit hours of upper-division coursework in the major must be completed at UTSA. Additional hours in the major sequence may be required under individual UTSA degree plans.

Dual Degrees

Undergraduate Engineering Dual Degree Program Description

Integrated BS/MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering

The student in this integrated BS/MS program will be on a fast track to receive the MS degree by completing graduate course sequence faster than a comparable undergraduate entered in the regular MS program.

Advantages:

Students will be on a fast track to receive their MS degree by completing their graduate course sequence faster than a comparable undergraduate entered in the regular MS program as the total credit hours for the integrated BS/MS program is reduced.
The GRE exam is waived for applicants to the BS/MS program
Early access to graduate level courses and opportunities to do graduate level research under the direct supervision of ECE UTSA faculty before completing their bachelor's degree.

Admission Eligibility:

The minimum GPA for admission to the standard MS programs is 3.3. In addition to this requirement, the BS/MS program will have higher admission standard requiring both accumulative and major GPA ≥ 3.3.
Applications to the BS/MS Program must be made after the completion of 75 but before 90 credit hours of coursework, usually in their junior year or in the sixth semester of the BS program.

Admissions Information

Graduate Admission to the College of Engineering

The University-wide admission policies are the basic requirements for admission to the M.S. degree programs offered in the College of Engineering. Each program has specific requirements beyond the University-wide admission policies. In order to be considered for unconditional admission to a graduate program, an applicant must submit a graduate application along with a nonrefundable application fee and meet the following criteria:
1.Earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited ­college or university in the United States or have proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution.
2.A minimum grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester credit hours of undergraduate coursework or total hours of awarded graduate degree.
3.Completed at least 18 semester credit hours (12 of which must be at the upper-division level) or foreign institution equivalent coursework in the area or areas in which the graduate degree is sought or in related areas as determined by the Graduate Program Committee for the proposed major.

Students granted admission to a master’s program at UTSA who do not register for courses the semester of admittance or for the following long semester must reapply for admission.

Doctoral students who are admitted but do not register for courses the semester of admittance are required to reapply and pay a nonrefundable application fee for the next available term, by the application deadline. Any subsequent application for admission must be in accordance with current admission requirements and deadlines. New transcripts, test scores, and other supporting documents are required after one academic year, since files for admitted students who do not register for courses are not retained after that period. (See program descriptions in Chapter 6, Graduate Program Requirements and Course Descriptions, for specific program admission requirements.)

Admission decisions are based on a careful holistic review of all aspects of the applicant’s file including standardized tests, undergraduate grade point average, letters of recommendation, research and teaching experience, etc. Some graduate programs have additional admissions criteria that applicants must meet; please see the individual listings on the Graduate School website and contact individual programs for full details.

Please note that satisfaction of these minimum standards does not guarantee admission, since the number of qualified applicants far exceeds the number of spaces available. As a consequence, many well-qualified applicants may not be accommodated.

Graduate Admission to an Engineering Department

MS-Biomedical Engineering (BME):

Students who hold an undergraduate degree may apply to the program. The minimum requirements for admission to the Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering program are described below. Note that admission is competitive and satisfying these requirements does not guarantee admission.
•Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the last 60 semester credit hours of coursework with a major in a recognized science or engineering discipline. All students should have had sufficient background in engineering, chemistry, biology, and physics prior to being admitted to the program. It is expected that these students will have B.S. degrees with an emphasis in either engineering, physical science, or biological science disciplines. All students are required to have completed at least one year of engineering physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics (up to Differential Equations I or Applied Engineering Analysis I). Students with deficiencies in the above courses will be required to satisfactorily complete selected courses as a condition of acceptance.
•A satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Admissions Committee for Biomedical Engineering, is required on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version or 79 on the Internet version. The applicant’s performance on a standardized test will be considered in addition to other criteria for admission or competitive scholarship awards and will not be used as the sole criterion for consideration of an applicant.
•Three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s readiness for graduate study.
•A complete application includes the application form, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, a résumé, and a statement of the applicant’s research experience, interests, and goals. TOEFL scores are required for those applicants whose native language is not English.

MS-Civil Engineering Program (CE):
For unconditional admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements, in addition to the University-wide graduate admission requirements (refer to Chapter 1, Admission):
•an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education, or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution;
•a satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Civil Engineering Graduate Studies Committee, on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE);
•Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum scores of 79 or 550 for Internet or paper versions, respectively;
•a statement of research/specialization interest; and
•a favorable recommendation by the Civil Engineering Graduate Studies Committee.

Master of Civil Engineering (MCE)
For unconditional admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements, in addition to the University-wide graduate admission requirements (refer to Chapter 1, Admission):
•an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education, or proof of equivalent training at a foreign institution;
•a satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Civil Engineering Graduate Studies Committee, on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE);
•Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum scores of 79 or 550 for Internet or paper versions, respectively;
•a statement of specialization interest; and
•a favorable recommendation by the Civil Engineering Graduate Studies Committee.

MS-Electrical Engineering (EE):

In addition to the University-wide graduate admission requirements, admission decisions will be based on a combination of the following:
•a satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Electrical Engineering Graduate Studies Committee, on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
•a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or in related fields for exceptional candidates
•a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 semester credit hours.

Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version, 79 on the TOEFL iBT, or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

A student who does not qualify for unconditional admission may be admitted on a conditional basis as determined by the Electrical Engineering Graduate Studies Committee. Applicants with an electrical engineering background who wish to continue their education but do not intend to pursue the Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering are encouraged to seek admission as special graduate students.

MS-Computer Engineering:

In addition to the University-wide graduate admission requirements, admission decisions will be based on a combination of the following:
•a satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Computer Engineering Graduate Studies Committee, on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
•a bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering or in related fields for exceptional candidates
•a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the last 60 semester credit hours of undergraduate studies.

Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version, 79 on the TOEFL iBT, or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

A student who does not qualify for unconditional admission may be admitted on a conditional basis as determined by the Computer Engineering Graduate Studies Committee. Applicants with an electrical or computer engineering background who wish to continue their education but do not intend to pursue the Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering are encouraged to seek admission as special graduate students.

MS-Advanced Materials Engineering (MatE):

In addition to the University-wide graduate admission requirements, admission decisions will be made by the Admissions Committee based on a combination of the following:
•A bachelor’s degree in any discipline of engineering, materials science, physics or chemistry. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in the last 60 semester credit hours of undergraduate studies.
•A statement of research experience, interests and goals.
•Letters of recommendation.
•A satisfactory score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test as evaluated by the Admissions Committee. An applicant’s performance on the GRE is considered with other criteria when making an admission or competitive fellowship decision but will not be used as the sole or primary criterion to end consideration of the applicant.

Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version, 79 on the TOEFL iBT, or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

MS-Mechanical Engineering Program (ME):

In addition to satisfying the University-wide graduate admission requirements, admission will be based on a combination of factors: a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education or proof of equivalent education at a foreign or unaccredited institution, satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and satisfactory undergraduate grade point average (GPA) in engineering or relevant coursework.

Applicants may be admitted on a conditional basis as determined by the Graduate Committee of the Department. Applicants with a degree in a discipline other than mechanical engineering may be required to make up the deficiencies in the undergraduate mechanical engineering curriculum. Undergraduate courses listed as deficiencies do not count toward the graduate degree. Other applicants who wish to continue their education in an area of Mechanical Engineering but do not intend to pursue a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering may seek admission as special graduate students

MS-Advanced Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering (AMEE):

Applicants must meet University-wide graduate admission requirements as outlined in Chapter 1, Admission, of this catalog. Applicants must also comply with general University regulations as outlined in Chapter 2, General Academic Regulations, and Chapter 4, Master’s Degree Regulations, of this catalog. Admission will be based on a combination of factors: a bachelor’s degree in engineering, science or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education or proof of equivalent education at a foreign or unaccredited institution, satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and a satisfactory undergraduate grade point average (GPA) in engineering, science or relevant coursework.

Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the program, the Graduate Advisor of Record (GAR), in consultation with the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program Committee and the Department Chair, will evaluate each student’s transcript and determine course deficiencies, if any, on a case-by-case basis. Students admitted with course deficiencies will be required to take additional remedial courses. Courses taken to make up deficiencies may not be counted toward the graduate degree requirements. Applicants who have insufficient preparation for the program, or who lack certain supporting documentation, may be admitted on a conditional basis.

PhD in Biomedical Engineering Program:

Students who hold an undergraduate or master’s degree may apply to the program. The minimum requirements for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering degree program are described below. Note that admission is competitive and satisfying these requirements does not guarantee admission.
•Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the last 60 semester credit hours of coursework with a major in a recognized science or engineering discipline. All students should have had sufficient background in engineering, chemistry, biology, and physics prior to being admitted to the program. It is expected that these students will have B.S. degrees with emphasis in either engineering, physical science, or biological science disciplines. All students are required to have completed at least one year of engineering physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics (up to Differential Equations I or Applied Engineering Analysis I). Students with deficiencies in the above courses will be required to satisfactorily complete selected courses as a condition of acceptance.

The Committee on Graduate Studies (COGS) will evaluate each student’s transcript and credit will be recommended for transfer on a course-by-course basis to satisfy the formal coursework requirements of the doctoral degree.
•A satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Admissions Committee for Biomedical Engineering, is required on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version or 79 on the Internet version. The applicant’s performance on a standardized test will be considered in addition to other criteria, for admission or competitive scholarship awards and will not be used as the sole criterion for consideration of an applicant.
•Three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s readiness for doctoral study.
•A complete application includes the application form, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, a résumé, and a statement of the applicant’s research experience, interests, and goals. TOEFL scores are required for those applicants whose native language is not English.

PhD in Electrical Engineering Program:

The minimum requirements for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering degree program are as follows:
•Normally, a student is expected to hold a master’s degree before being granted admission to the program. Only exceptional, well prepared, and highly competitive candidates should apply to enter the Ph.D. program directly upon receiving a bachelor’s degree.
•Applicants with a master’s degree must have a grade point average of 3.3 or better in their master’s degree program. Applicants without a master’s degree program must have a grade point average of 3.3 or better in the last 60 semester credit hours of undergraduate coursework in electrical engineering.
•Applicants who would like to transfer in coursework from another institution or applicants admitted without an earned master’s degree in electrical engineering may apply a maximum of 27 semester credit hours of previously earned graduate credit toward their doctoral degree. Each student’s transcript will be evaluated by the Doctoral Studies Committee and credit will be designated on a course-by-course basis to satisfy the formal coursework requirements of the degree.
•A satisfactory score, as evaluated by the Doctoral Studies Committee for Electrical Engineering, is required on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The GRE score will be considered with other criteria in making admission or competitive scholarship decisions and will not be used as the sole criterion for consideration of the applicant or as the primary criterion to end consideration of the applicant.
•Students whose native language is not English must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper version, 79 on the TOEFL iBT, or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
•Letters of recommendation, preferably three, attesting to the applicant’s readiness for doctoral study.

A complete application includes the application form, official transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, a résumé, a statement of research experience, interests and goals, and the TOEFL or IELTS score for those applicants whose native language is not English. Admission is competitive. Satisfying these requirements does not guarantee admission.

Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering Program:

Applicants must satisfy the following requirements, in addition to satisfying the University-wide graduate admission requirements (refer to Chapter 1, Admission):
•a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree from an accredited university, and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in upper-division and graduate courses. The degrees should be in biology, ecology, environmental science, chemistry, geology, geography, environmental engineering, civil engineering or other related scientific or engineering discipline. Exceptional applicants without a Master of Science degree may be considered for admission to the program on a case-by-case basis;
•three letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant’s academic potential;
•official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores;
•a letter of research/specialization interest; and
•a résumé/curriculum vita.

Applications must be submitted to the UTSA Graduate School online at http://graduateschool.utsa.edu/. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Acceptance to the program is decided by the Doctoral Studies Committee (DSC), comprised of graduate faculty members selected from the CEE Department and the College of Sciences. Full-time students accepted for the program are eligible to apply for financial support in the form of competitive teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or research fellowships.

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering Program:

The minimum requirements for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering degree program are as follows:
•Students must meet the University admission requirements as outlined in the graduate catalog.
•Students whose native language is not English must have a satisfactory English test score to meet the University admission requirements.
•Satisfactory GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores, as evaluated by the Graduate Program Committee of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, are required in combination with other criteria for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering degree program.
•Outstanding students, who do not hold a Master's degree, may enter the Doctor of Philosophy program on provisional status directly upon receiving a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field, with the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee.

Entrance Requirements for Foreign Students

Applications from non-U.S. citizens or nonpermanent residents will be processed as international. This includes applications received from other countries. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
1) Meet the graduate admission requirements. Applicants who will be on a student visa may not be admitted other than as graduate degree-seeking students. (An I-20 form is not issued to non-degree-seeking or special graduate students.)
2) Submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The code for UTSA is 6919. A minimum score on the TOEFL is required. TOEFL scores may be waived for international students from countries where English is the primary language of instruction and the principal language spoken in the home; or for noncitizens of the United States earning a bachelor's degree or higher in the United States or other English-speaking countries. Participation in UTSA's English Language Assessment Program (ELAP) before registration is required of students with TOEFL scores below 600 (paper version) or 100 (Internet based) or 7 (IELTS). Based on this assessment, students needing additional instruction in English are required to enroll in appropriate English for International Students (EIS) courses.
3) Submit a statement guaranteeing the student's ability to pay all expenses while a student at UTSA, if attendance under the F-1 (student) visa is anticipated. The statement may be sent from a parent or guardian when endorsed by a bank or other reliable institution, or from a U.S. citizen who will accept responsibility for the student's financial needs.
4) Have an application, $90 nonrefundable application fee, and supporting credentials on file in the Graduate School by the appropriate application deadline. International students applying for readmission are only required to pay a $90 nonrefundable application fee. The $90 nonrefundable application fee is also charged upon reapplication for admission following academic dismissal. See Application Dates for deadlines.

The above criteria serve as guidelines for admission for international students. The credentials of each applicant are examined on an individual basis by the Graduate School and the appropriate graduate program committee, with admission granted only to those who show promise of success in graduate study at UTSA.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Faculty research areas include systems and control, digital signal processing, communications, electronic materials and devices, and computer engineering. Emerging research fields also include, e.g.: computational system biology, multifunctional sensors and actuators, power and electric energy, and cyber security research.

Research Description By Engineering Research Center

Center for Advanced Manufacturing & Lean Systems

The Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Lean Systems(CAMLS) at UTSA provides unique source of expertise in flexible and lean technologies and systems, state-of-the-art technology applications in manufacturing, service, and defense industries. The focus of research is on two main areas:

1) Advanced Manufacturing Systems: effective and efficient integration and synthesis of automation technologies, human resources, and decision-making models for design, planning, scheduling, and control of production of goods and delivery of services.

2) Lean Systems: systematic elimination of waste (anything that does not add value) by using various lean and six-sigma tools and methodologies to continuously improve value creating processes in manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors.

The research, education, and training activities of CAMLS are related to the Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing, and Mechanical Engineering Divisions of ASEE.

Center for Excellence in Engineering Education

The Center for Excellence in Engineering Education (CE3) provides a holistic approach to improve the quality of eduation in the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio. The Center will improve the retention, graduation rates, marketability and preparedness of the students in the College. Workshops for writing and problem solving skills, resources for internship opportunities, tutoring and gate keeper courses, FE exam preparation, and career advising are all examples of the activities on hand at the Center. The Center also facilitates sequential internships in local industries as part of student development.

Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute (SERI)

The Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute was created to develop citizen leaders for the global community committed to transform the energy future of San Antonio, Texas and the nation. The Institute integrates scientific discovery, engineering innovation and policy deliberations with pragmatic implementation and a commitment to our multicultural traditions to realize the promise of tomorrow’s America as a global energy leader. The Institute also serves as a center of intellectual creativity that promotes socioeconomic development regionally, nationally and globally.
