Research Description By Graduate Engineering Department

Aerospace Engineering

Faculty research provides valuable educational opportunities for graduate students. Current research topics include theoretical and experimental aerodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, composite materials and structures, damage and failure mechanics, impact dynamics, multipisciplinary analysis and design, and flight dynamics and control. The department's facilities, which are among the finest of any university nationwide, include six wind tunnels, a water tunnel, and a structural testing lab.

Biomedical Engineering

Faculty and student research topics include biodegradable biomaterials for biomedical devices, neuro-robotics and brain-machine interface, biosensors and bioimaging to detect and monitor physiological functions, biomechanics of human movement and human rolling, and mechanobiology and biomedicine for cardiovascular disease.

Electrical Engineering & Computer Science

Faculty and graduate students conduct research in communications, signal processing, computers and digital systems, control systems, and energy and power systems. Modern electrical engineering laboratories contain facilities for experimental work in areas of instrumentation, control systems, computers and digital systems, optical systems, electronics, circuits, energy conversion, power electronics and power quality.

Industrial, Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering

Faculty and graduate students conduct research in industrial ergonomics/human factors, manufacturing systems engineering, engineering systems, and engineering management. The department is equipped with modern laboratories in human factors engineering, metrology, manufacturing processes, computer-integrated manufacturing, and computer-aided design.

Mechanical Engineering

The faculty have developed research activities in several areas of specialization, including engineering materials properties and failure modes; controls, robotics, and automation; multibody and impact dynamics; mechanical engineering design and manufacturing; thermodynamics and transport processes; combustion; and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and energy conversion.

Research Description By Engineering Research Center

National Institute for Aviation Research

The Institute houses more than a dozen state-of-the-art labs, including Composites and Advanced Materials, Fatigue and Fracture, Structures, Aging Aircraft, Aircraft Icing, Aerodynamics, Virtual Reality Center, Crash Dynamics, CAD/CAM, Information Technology Center, Visual Technology, Computational Mechanics, Human Factors, Ergonomics and Research Machine Shop. It is also home to four Centers of Excellence. These centers promote the safety, research, manufacturing and design elements of today's aviation industry. The Federal Aviation Administration has designated the Institute as a Center of Excellence for General Aviation Research, an FAA Airworthiness Assurance Center of Excellence, and most recently the FAA Center of Excellence for Composites and Advanced Materials. The Institute is also recognized as a Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation Center of Excellence.
