Bachelor's Degree Requirements

Complete the curriculum of 198 Units with a grade point average of 2.0 (C) or better for all units in the major. Complete the required general education courses. Earn not fewer than 50 quarter units in residence and spend not less than three quarters in residence (two of these immediately preceding graduation). Meet the Graduation Writing requirement.

Master's Degree Requirements

Engineering graduate students may be granted graduate credit only for courses numbered 400 and above. A grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better must be maintained. Master of Science in Engineering: a minimum of 45 quarter units of coursework, of which at least 24 units must be in 500 and 600 level courses. Each program of study consists of at least 15 units of breadth courses, at least 15 units of technical speciality courses, elective courses, and either a thesis (4-9 units) or a comprehensive exam (1 unit). Master of Science in Electrical Engineering: a minimum of 46 quarter units of coursework, of which no more than 8 units may be at the 400 level. Each program of study consists of at least 8 units of breadth courses, 16 units of technical emphasis courses, 16 units of electives, and either a thesis (4-6 units) or a comprehensive exam (2 units) plus one elective (4 units). Master of Science in Civil Engineering: a minimum of 45 quarter units of coursework, of which at least 36 must be at the 500 and 600 level. Each program of study includes at least 8 units of breadth courses and 20 units of technical emphasis courses. The balance of units consists of technical electives and either a thesis (4-8 units) or a final project that consists of two courses taken in sequence (2 units each). Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering: a minimum of 45 units of coursework, of which at least 36 units must be in 500 and 600 level courses. Each program of study consists of at least 12 units of breadth courses, at least 12 units of technical emphasis courses, at least 12 units units of elective courses, and either a thesis (4-9 units) or an independent study with a comprehensive examination (4 units). Master of Science in Engineering Management: a minimum of 48 quarter units of coursework which should include atleast 20 units of graduate business administration courses and 20 units of engineering graduate courses. The remaining units consist of atleast 6 units of electives and either a thesis or an Independent Study with a comprehensive exam.

Other Student Support Programs

Academic Excellence Workshops, administered through MEP, are supplements to certain foundation courses in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering and are open by invitation only. Participants in MEP and SEES in the College of Science receive priority consideration. The Workshop program promotes technical excellence in the subject area while also developing communications skills and building an academic community under the guidance of a trained facilitator. An invitation to participate should be regarded as an honor and a unique opportunity.

- Engineering Advising Center (EAC) is committed to supporting a diverse undergraduate population of aspiring engineers. EAC strives to provide equitable, holistic, and consistent academic advising to ensure student success. We advocate for students, while also empowering them to advocate for themselves. Engineering advising provides at-risk and general advising for all engineering students.

-Cal Poly Pomona Women in Engineering (CPP WE) is dedicated to engaging all women within the college of engineering. Engineering College Description and Special Characteristics

Cal Poly Pomona College of Engineering has a well-earned reputation for helping meet the technical challenges facing our nation by preparing engineers to contribute significantly to industry upon graduation. Graduates are workforce-ready as the college's engineering programs emphasize strong theoretical background with early and significant laboratory experiences.

The college provides study opportunities to over 5500 students in eleven accredited engineering and technology programs and seven graduate programs. Each program give students both an understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering as an applied science and the practical expertise to apply these principles in real-world situations.

The following text was offered to each school as a guideline for the calculation of externally-funded research expenditures:

Include all expenditures associated with grants and contracts specifically budgeted for externally sponsored research and associated programs and expenditures associated with all gifts auditably used for research. Include expended funds provided by the following external sources:

  1. Federal Government
  2. State Government
  3. Foreign Governments
  4. Industry
  5. Non-Profit Organizations (e.g. foundations)
  6. Individuals
  7. Local Government

The expenditures reported should be only those funds provided by organizations, agencies, and individuals external to the institution. Cost sharing/matching funds should be included only if provided from sources external to the institution.

Only State government funds that were obtained competitively or as matching funds associated with other externally funded programs should be included. State funds that are part of the normal operating budget should not be included regardless of purpose.

For all joint or contracted projects or sub-projects, only the portion of the center research performed by faculty, staff, and students of the affiliated engineering school should be credited to that school. Expenditures for capital costs of research laboratory building construction should not be included.

Expenditures for research laboratory renovations should not be included unless the renovation funds expended came from grants and contracts expressly intended for the direct support of engineering research.

Any portion of academic year and/or summer salary for any researcher that is not derived from external research grants or contracts should not be counted.

Total #: Report total number of individual grants, not the total dollar amount of the expenditures.

Expenditures: Report actual expenditures (as opposed to authorization amounts) in U.S. dollars.

Time frame for expenditures: Report expenditures for your current fiscal year.

Research centers listed as "WITHIN an engineering department" on the Research Centers page (screen 7) of the College of Engineering Profile, will not have their expenditures added to the school's total research expenditures. Such expenditures can be included in the department total, while still being listed for the appropriate center. This allows users to list the expenditures in two areas without double-counting.

Academic Excellence Workshops, administered through MEP, are supplements to certain foundation courses in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering and are open by invitation only. Engineering design is a particularly strong component of our curricula and emphasizes student creativity, development and use of design methodology, formulation of design problem statements and specifications, consideration of alternative solutions, feasibility and optimality considerations.

Engineering design experiences include course projects, traditional Senior Projects, and Team Senior Projects.

Engineering Technology College Description and Special Characteristics

Cal Poly Pomona's College of Engineering has a well-earned reputation for helping to meet the technical challenges facing our nation by preparing engineers prepared to contribute significantly to industry upon graduation. The emphasis on a strong theoretical background coordinated with early and significant laboratory experiences continues to make the program unique in engineering education. The college provides study opportunities to over 5000 students in eleven accredited engineering and technology curricula and seven graduate programs. Each curriculum is designed to give the student both an understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering as an applied science and the practical expertise to apply these principles to actual situations.
